Service and volunteerism are at the heart of the DAR.  If you would like to find out more, there are several ways in which you can serve.  Please visit the National website to see the entire variety of projects that DAR has available.  Here are a few.  If you see something here you are interested in, or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact any one of the officers or committee chairmen, on the local, state or national level. 

 

 

CHAPTER PROJECTS 

President General’s Project:  “Restoration of the NSDAR Headquarters Buildings.” 

Essay Contests: 

American History Essay Contest: Students in grades 5-8 are encouraged to participate in the American History essay contest. All students in grades 5 through 8 in a public, private, or parochial school, or those who are home schooled, are eligible. This contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin.  One local award will be given per grade level, per chapter. 

The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest:  Students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private, or parochial schools, or those who are home schooled, may enter the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest.  Since l996, the NSDAR has joined with the National Italian American Foundation to sponsor an annual national essay contest on Christopher Columbus. This contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin.  One local award is given per grade level, per chapter.

Good Citizenship Medal:  For a boy or girl in grades 5 through 11 (one medal per grade per school).  The medal may also be awarded to youth service and patriotic organizations whose membership fulfills the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism, such as scouts, police cadets, and other community service organizations. 

DAR Good Citizen:  A DAR Good Citizens Medal is given each year to a high school senior who is determined by both faculty and senior class students to have demonstrated, in an outstanding way, the qualities of a good citizen.  Only one student per year may be honored as a school’s DAR Good Citizen.  That person then is eligible to enter the DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Contest. 

ROTC Medal:  ROTC Medals and campaign bars are given to a student who has demonstrated qualities of dependability and good character, adherence to military discipline, leadership ability and a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of ROTC training.  The bronze ROTC Medal is given to only one graduating student, male or female, in a graduating class in high school or junior college in the Junior ROTC Program. 

DAR School Scholarship:   Applicant must prepare a statement of 1,000 words or less setting forth his/her career objectives, specifying how college major (if required) or college plans relate to future professional goals, and reasons for these choices.  For application package, contact Committee Chairwoman
